ON THE ISSUES

Oye’s Priorities

DC Statehood

As the US Representative for DC, Oye is committed to ensuring that all residents of our great city have full voting representation in the United States Congress. Unfortunately, the District of Columbia is still a non-state territory, denying its residents the same rights and benefits enjoyed by other United States citizens - while still requiring our residents to pay federal income taxes.

Oye is proud to lead the movement advocating for DC statehood, driven by our shared goal of providing equal access to opportunities for every member of the DC community. His foremost priority is to address the pressing issues that matter most to our residents.

With unwavering dedication, Oye works to educate and advocate for DC statehood and equality. Granting the District of Columbia the rights it deserves is essential to fostering safe roadways, secure neighborhoods, comprehensive policies and procedures, full control over our local budget, and an unwavering commitment to public health.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure that every voice in the District of Columbia is heard in the halls of Congress.

He worked diligently to ensure that essential vaccines and medications were accessible to all. During COVID-19 Oye personally distributed 10,000 vaccines to local residents. Today, Rep. Increasing Public Safety

Public safety is a paramount concern in our nation's capital. However, the lack of statehood for the District of Columbia leaves our elected leaders with limited power to address local issues effectively. Congress's continued interference in D.C. affairs has hindered our ability to pass comprehensive and progressive laws to tackle crime in our city. In this office, we lead through service and adopt a smart-on-crime approach.

Since 2020, Representative Oye Owolewa and his team have actively collaborated with think tanks, nonprofit organizations, and groups representing returning citizens. Our goal is to provide residents of D.C. with a fair opportunity for a second chance. We are proud to have partnered with the Christian Legal Aid of D.C. and other organizations to launch "Expungement Clinics." These clinics offer invaluable guidance to previously incarcerated individuals, teaching them how to clear their records and supporting them through the process.

Additionally, we have worked diligently to connect returning citizens with second chance employers who are committed to providing job opportunities. It has been proven that increased employment, particularly within the returning citizens community, plays a significant role in reducing crime and enhancing public safety. In Representative Oye's office, we firmly believe that expanding people's options leads to better outcomes.

By focusing on criminal justice reform, promoting expungement, and fostering job opportunities for returning citizens, we strive to create a safer and more equitable District of Columbia. Representative Oye is dedicated to advancing policies that address the root causes of crime, empower individuals with a second chance, and enhance public safety for all residents.

Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Economic Development in Minority and Underrepresented Communities

A strong economy and the availability of good jobs are vital for the well-being and progress of our community. Representative Oye Owolewa understands that economic stability not only provides individuals with financial security, but it also drives overall growth and improves the quality of life for everyone in Washington, D.C.

Rep. Owolewa is a staunch advocate for prioritizing investments in minority-owned businesses, recognizing the immense contributions of African-Americans in shaping the vibrant culture of Washington, D.C. With African-Americans comprising nearly half of the city's population, it is crucial to establish a thriving business district that truly reflects their experiences and aspirations. By fostering an environment of inclusivity and opportunity, we can promote prosperity and representation within the minority community.

Having access to quality job opportunities allows individuals to support themselves and their families, fulfill their potential, and contribute meaningfully to society. It also fosters a sense of dignity and empowerment, promoting social mobility and reducing inequality.

Furthermore, a robust economy benefits the entire community by generating revenue for public services, infrastructure development, and essential programs that enhance the overall well-being of our residents. A thriving economy attracts investment, encourages innovation, and creates a favorable environment for businesses big and small to flourish, leading to increased opportunities for entrepreneurship and economic advancement.

Rep. Owolewa is committed to championing policies that promote economic growth, support local businesses, and attract investment to our city. By fostering a strong and inclusive economy, we can ensure a brighter future for all, with sustainable employment, upward mobility, and shared prosperity.

A Recent DC council study found that black-owned and women-owned businesses receive a disproportionately low percentage of contracts compared to their counterparts. While bias and discrimination surely exists, Rep. Owolewa looked into the matter deeper and realized the true fundamental issue. The reason why certain groups are left behind in grants, contracts and other opportunities is because they’re unaware of the process to receive funding and they lack access to the key decision makers. Simply put, too many people don’t understand the process nor do they have the relationships to receive contracts and grants, etc. To help find solutions, Rep Oye partners with local, federal, public and private organizations to host Capital Business Seminars to teach minority and/or women business owners key information while providing them access to key government employees. Rep Oye understands what you know, who you know and who knows you often defines who wins and loses. Rep Oye’s goal is for his free business seminars to help even the playing field to the point everyone in DC gets their fair shot to define and reach their success.

Together, we can build a resilient economy that benefits every resident of Washington, D.C.
